Ancient Meets Modern
Contemporary Contexts for Traditional Techniques

Instructor: Lillian Sizemore

Can't make it to Italy right now? No worries, you can learn traditional Italian setting styles and rules for mosaics at Institute of Mosaic Art. Lillian Sizemore is an Italian-trained artist who focuses on teaching traditional mosaic setting styles, and encourages students to apply these rules to more modern contexts while combining them with contemporary mosaic styles. This mosaic class focuses in-depth on stone-marble and travertine-mosaics. Moreover, the class will cover the history of mosaics, traditional and contemporary cutting tools, traditional lay patterns and designs; and how they can be used in contemporary contexts.

This course will introduce students to traditional mosaic "rules" and how to combine this knowledge with their own creative styles. Each student will receive individualized instruction for use of hammer and hardie, experiment with square-set lay patterns, copy an ancient mosaic design and learn how to design and create at least one traditional style mosaic of their own. To inspire students to take their training to the next level, they will be encouraged to experiment with several techniques. Additionally, students will complete a series of small mosaic exercises based on lectures given, culminating in a final project. There will be homework and some personal research required. Students will take home at least three completed projects by the end of the class.
