An IMA instructor will be on hand to guide participants in the selection of a grout color that will enhance their piece.
Students should bring in pieces that can be completed within the three hour time period, including wait time. Students can bring multiple pieces to grout if they can multi task and complete all, including buffing in the time frame of the clinic.
Students must provide their own grout (Mosaic Studio Supply, our in house retail store, has 25 colors to choose from). IMA will provide grouting supplies including: buckets, sponges, paper towels, mixing tools and latex gloves.
Pre-registration is required and space is limited to 10 grouters!

This weekend course is designed for continuing students with previous mosaic experience who would like to refine and expand their setting techniques.
Topics covered will include: cutting and processing for precise setting, lay patterning, working with specific media, spacial relations, methods of "seeing" and developing tools and techniques to work with increased speed and precision. Students will come away with strategies and methods for creating more "flow" in their work and will learn how to work with line and color to create form, rhythm and a professional look in their mosaic work.
Course will include a series of specially designed exercises to help train the eye to "see" spaces and how to fill them using less cutting and nipping. Students will also experiment with different setting styles and how these styles can affect the look of the overall piece. These exercises will also help students become more in tune with their preferred setting styles, which can help students to bring out their own personal style.
Lecture and demonstration will cover use of tools and how to get the most out of your tools and materials for easier setting. Class will also cover information on how students can select the proper adhesives to enhance the style of their piece and make fitting and setting easier. Students will be working with both glass and ceramic tile, and should have at least beginning cutting skills with both types of material.
Although students will not actually grout in class, instructor will cover different issues relating to grout and setting, such as.. to grout or not to grout, setting with grout joints in mind, using grout joints as design elements and selecting grout colors to enhance setting styles and techniques.

Instructor will demonstrate breaking and nipping techniques that will allow students to get the most out of their raw materials and explain which adhesives to use on different types of surfaces and how to prepare these surfaces for mosaic application.
As most pique assiette pieces are textured, instructor will focus on specific grouting techniques for three dimensional and textured surfaces.

Experience an inspiring environment in which to take your mosaic art to a deeper level of creative connection. Working within the framework of the "mandala" or sacred circle, each week we integrate mosaic-making with a variety of tools designed to provide reflections into artistic expression. You will learn a variety of ways in which to work more freely and intuitively. We explore how working with the circle can connect us with ancient symbols, cycles of nature, deeper levels of conciousness, and a more integrated sense of self. These new tools are used to focus your creative process as you design, choose materials, and set a uniquely personal 24" diameter mosaic piece. The first hour of each class begins with a guided meditation to rest and center the mind, followed by the lecture topic of the week, creativity exercises, open discussion and pertinent readings. The last two hours of class are hands-on mosaic work in a lively group setting.
You are free to work with the materials of your choice (tile, glass, stone, mixed media, etc.). Experimentation is encouraged! It is suggested that you have some experience in various mosaic techniques. Homework will most likely be needed to finish the piece, depending on complexity of personal design. Lillian gives plenty of one-on-one guidance and support in unfolding your creative journey.
Materials Note:
A recommended Materials and Reading List will be provided upon paid registration. A 24" wooden base and adhesives are part of the class fee. Students should plan to provide all materials for their design and bring these materials to the second class. Mind's Eye Students receive a 10% discount coupon good for one-time purchase on materials bought at Mosaic Studio Supply. The coupon will be available at the first class.
Attendance Note:
The class experience is structured to build on information presented from week to week, culminating in the final class and an exhibition. In order to maintain continuity, if you think you would miss more than three classes during the 9-week session, please consider enrolling at another time.
Testimonials from former students:
"The nurturing of the creative process and the tools to "stir the pot" made this an enormously satisfying experience for me. This is one of the very few times that I have created something I love. I don't know if this is an art form whose time has come for me, or the fact that I'm still new at it so it's all exciting and stimulating, or if your class and where I am in my life came together at the perfect time. The fact is, it all came together in your class." — R.C. Foster City, CA
"Your class is way beyond my wildest expectations - so much is "bubbling up" regarding the mandala and just life in general. I can't quite pinpoint what magic you're brewing." —J.A Berkeley, CA
"It was the first time I really used art as an expression of something within-- and not just to make something pretty. It was exciting! The connections with the other women in the group were very important. I really liked being able to sit and share our experiences with each other and express how the art itself weaved its way through our lives. — L.N. Berkeley, CA
"I enjoyed the meditation exercises, the exposure to some great reading and your feedback and expertise on our mosaic pieces was greatly appreciated. Learning about tools and exercises to tap into my creativity gave me a space to be less critical of myself." — N.C. Santa Clara, CA

Take your mosaic training to the next level...
Can't make it to Italy right now? You can learn traditional Italian setting styles and rules for mosaics at True Mosaics Studio in Oakland. Instructor trained in Italy and focuses on teaching traditional mosaic setting styles and encourages students to apply these rules to more modern contexts and combine them with contemporary mosaic styles.
This is an in-depth mosaic course focusing on stone-marble and travertine-mosaics. Class will cover the history of mosaics, traditional and contemporary cutting tools, traditional lay patterns and designs and how they can be used in contemporary contexts. Students will complete a series of small mosaic exercises based on lectures given, culminating in a final project.
This course will introduce students to traditional mosaic "rules" and how to combine this knowledge with their own creative styles. Each student will receive individualized instruction for use of hammer and hardie, experiment with square-set lay patterns, copy an ancient mosaic design and learn how to design and create at least one traditional style mosaic of their own. Students will be encouraged to experiment with several techniques. There will be homework and some personal research required.
Students will bring home at least three completed projects by the end of the class.
