This is an intermediate to advanced course geared toward students who are moving into the field of professional applications and installations. Instructor Laurel True has over 15 years experience doing large-scale mosaic commissions, public mosaic work and architectural applications. She works closely with clients, architects and other professionals to create site specific designs that relate to particular environments and or groups.
Class will cover basic design theory, addressing client needs, designing for specific spaces, ways to address installation, fabrication and planning and pricing permanent work. This is not a how-to-set mosaics class, but rather a class that addresses the specific concerns of professional applications and commissioned work.
Students are asked to bring ideas for a specific, actual project. This can be a mural, a back-splash, pillars, floor inset, fireplace surround etc. Students must bring in dimensions and digital images of their project site. First class will include a slide lecture of different types of permanent applications and lecture on how to approach a project. In the weeks to follow, students will actually design, draw, trace, code and select colors for a real project, as well as develop a budget and timeline for production. Final class session will include a demonstration of how to install a permanent project.
