A fusion of our very popular Mosaic Garden Sphere and Mosaicing Sculptural Forms classes in the weekend format!
Mosaic a one-of-a-kind mosaic sphere or other sculptural object for your home or garden! In this exciting intermediate level class, students will learn to cover an existing form with hand-cut tesserae, working with the natural curves of the three-dimensional surface.
Students will work with high-fire ceramic tile, or mixed media using cement-based and other appropriate adhesives that will withstand the elements.
Class will include lecture and demonstration addressing appropriate substrates and adhesives, prepping three dimensional forms to receive mosaics, types of materials, cutting, shaping and setting mosaic tesserae, correct spacing and laying of tesserae for a safe and professional finish.
Instructor will work with students on design, display and technical application considerations and how to creatively approach a unique form with mosaic.
Limited materials included, students should bring or purchase their own materials with a 10% discount from Mosaic Studio Supply.
There will be a grout lecture as well as a grout color selection discussion on Sunday that will fully prepare students for the specific issues that arise when grouting a 3D piece. Students will not grout in class but will use class time to create their mosaic.
Sculpture Resources and Guidelines:
Continuing students from IMA Concrete, Garden Sphere and or Sculpture classes are most welcome to bring the pieces they have created. Also, cement or terra cotta garden ornament or flower pots are readily available. 9" concrete spheres are available for purchase through the on site retail store, Mosaic Studio Supply (must be ordered 2 weeks in advance of class). Please do not bring raw Styrofoam balls. These should be covered with concrete. Terra cotta should be prepped with Bonderizer. Please contact IMA with question about an appropriate substrate.
