GIFT MAKING SERIES: PIQUE ASSIETTE MEMORY VESSEL

Instructor: Laurel True
Sessions: 2
Level: Beginner
Prerequisite: No mosaic or art experience necessary
Cost: $145
Materials: Most materials provided

Create a personal and one-of-a-kind memory vessel after the tradition of American Folk Art.

Perfect for gift giving and for creating a visual scrapbook using mixed media Pique Assiette mosaic techniques. Pique Assiette is the age old technique of creating mosaic and assemblage out of shards of broken pottery, crockery and dishes. Literally translated from French as "stolen plates", pique assiette is a process of making mosaics that allows us to include objects from our environment and found objects as well as more traditional mosaic media.

Students are encouraged to bring plates, mugs, heirlooms, dishes and other ceramic and glass bric-a-brac to include in a personalized piece of art. A great selection of ceramic dishes, tiles and mixed media tesserae will be provided for students to use as well.

A selection of pots and vessels will be provided for students to use as a substrate, although students are invited to bring their own vessel to cover within certain size parameters (12" tall maximum).

Instructor will demonstrate breaking and nipping techniques that will allow students to get the most out of their raw materials and explain which adhesives to use on different types of surfaces and how to prepare these surfaces for mosaic application.

As most pique assiette pieces are textured, instructor will focus on specific grouting techniques for three dimensional and textured surfaces.

Students will bring home a completed pique assiette memory vessel-great as a keepsake or as a personalized gift for family or friends.
