Glass Mosaics Extended Study

Instructor: Rachel Rodi

This is an in-depth glass mosaics class for students of all experience levels.

A broad range of cutting and shaping tools for glass will be demonstrated including scoring tools, breakers and pliers as well as more intermediate tools such as grinders and lens/circle cutters. Instructor will present lecture and demonstration of basic setting styles for glass mosaics as well as more sophisticated lay patterning, use of andamento, shading and color combining for continuing students.

A wide range of glass media will be presented, to give students an idea of how to combine different types of glass into one piece and how to best deal with different size and thickness of tesserae. Students will be guided through a series of short exercises that will help them put into play the expanded lessons and cutting exercises they will receive in the lecture.

Students will then design and create a personal project appropriate for their skill level for interior use using one or more glass media. Substrates will be of the student's choice. Square (14" x 14") or rectangular (12' x 16') substrate provided. Students bringing their own substrate — substrate must be within 14" x 14" average size, cut and prepared, and brought to first day of class.

Class will focus on finer setting techniques that will allow students to add dimension and sophistication to their work. The last day of class is devoted to grouting. Some homework may be required depending on the complexity of design. Students may bring their own glass cutting tools and materials tools.
