Large site-specific projects become manageable when planned for and fabricated in advance in the studio. In this two-day workshop students will learn through presentation and practice how to make mosaic using a technique taught in some of the great mosaic schools of Italy. Fun and intensive, this class will begin on Saturday with a discussion of the materials and methods involved working in reverse for architectural application as well as other related methods suitable for smaller studio projects.
We will discuss glue, paper, keying and mapping the project and setting the mosaic etc. After this tutorial, each student will go on to make at least one foot square mosaic project using this time tested technique of gluing tesserae face down onto paper and then flipping the mosaic onto a provided substrate. Grouting will be demonstrated in class and advice will be available to students who wish to grout their piece at home.
Hammer and hardie technique will be reviewed and these tools as well as nippers will be available for use.
Feel free to come with design ideas and any specific materials or tools you like or use the provided patterns and supplies.
Materials fee covers all of the necessary materials including a limited selection of tesserae. Students may bring additional material or purchase from the Mosaic Source.
