Indirect Techniques for Mosaic

Instructor: Dmitry Grudsky

Indirect Techniques for Mosaic is a wonderful introduction to the reverse method of setting mosaic in adhesive. The class is taught by mosaic master Dmitry Grudsky. This course is designed for both beginning and continuing mosaic art students who are interested in the reverse or indirect method of setting their tesserae into a bed of adhesive. This method allows mosaic to be made in reverse with a surface that is totally flat and smooth. Class discussions will include the use of appropriate substrates, adhesives and grout. The instructor will present the concept of andamento (flow) and guide students in different setting styles that may include additional design considerations. Under the instructor's supervision, students will have an opportunity to explore a variety of materials, such as glass, porcelain and stone; and they will learn how to cut and place tiles.

At the end of this mosaic art class, the instructor will demonstrate how to flip the completed mosaic into a prepared mortar bed to reveal the design. He will also show students how to execute proper grouting methods for this indirect technique mosaic. Students will design a small mosaic in class and grout their pieces at home.
