Intermediate Glass Mosaics

Instructor: Rachel Rodi or Erin Rogers

Intermediate level students will enjoy this opportunity to expand and deepen their skills with this weekend-intensive course. The instructor will demonstrate the use of a broad range of glass cutting and shaping tools, including scoring tools, breakers, pliers, grinding tools and lens/circle cutters. Moreover, the class will involve presentations on fundamental setting techniques and styles that go beyond the basics, as well as more sophisticated lay patterning. A few of these include Italian setting styles and use of andamento, shading and color combining. These finer setting techniques will allow students to add dimension and sophistication to their work.

A broad range of glass media will also be presented in this mosaic class to give students an idea of how to combine different types of glass into one piece, and how to best deal with different size and thickness of tesserae. There will be no grouting in class and some homework may be required depending on design complexity.

Students will be guided through a series of short exercises that will help them execute the expanded lessons and cutting demonstrations of this mosaic art class. Students will then design and create a personal project to take home. Students may take in their own glass cutting tools, or use tools that will be available in class.
