Mosaicing Three-Dimensional Forms
Instructor: Tracy Broback
Three-dimensional mosaics are a wonderful way to showcase colorful indoor or outdoor designs. Mosaicing Three-Dimensional Forms covers appropriate substrates, tesserae, adhesives and finishes for 3-D mosaics. The instructor will lead students through the steps of creating medium size, custom art pieces with forms that require additional finesse and creativity. These techniques include prepping three dimensional forms to receive mosaics; selecting types of materials; cutting, shaping and setting mosaic tesserae; determining correct spacing and laying of tesserae for a professional finish; grouting and safety considerations.
This class is best suited for students who have a grasp of basic mosaic techniques and are ready for a more challenging project. On the first day of class students should take a three-dimensional subtrate — about the size of a three gallon bucket or smaller. Some ideas include: a concrete birdbath (unsealed concrete only), a large flowerpot or urn, or a sculptural piece or concrete form. Continuing students from the Concrete and Sculpture Department are welcome to use their casts. Additionally, students must provide their own tile/glass or other tesserae for their project. Students may use ceramic tile, glass or mixed media. However, those who choose to work with glass should have experience cutting glass. Students can purchase materials from our Mosaic Supply Store for their projects and/or bring their own to the mosaic class. Students will complete one mosaic sculpture embellishment.
