Mosaic Artist Tammy Lee takes students one a one day journey of exploration through the use of direct application, non-grouted mosaics using exotic materials from around the globe. Materials include: Venetian millefiore, Italian and Mexican smalti, Van Gogh and art glass, vitreous glass from China and Italy, glass beads from Africa, Mexican pottery, antique pique assiette tesserae and more...
Class will cover an introduction of millefiori, smalti, vitreous glass and other materials and their variations and uses as well as a presentation of where the materials come from and how they are made. Students will use a traditional setting method to embed tesserae into a tinted adhesive layer originally used for smalti. This means no grouting!
Students will explore design solutions and various modes of direct setting with mixed media glass materials, using materials in surprising combinations. Students will experiment using complimentary materials and colors and the instructor will demonstrate a variety of cutting techniques and methods as well as ways of setting tesserae to get differing effects.
Pattern and color design inspirations from around the world will be available as resources for students. Students will bring home a completed multimedia mosaic mirror.
