This course is designed for students who have or would like to take their mosaics into the realm of public art. This intensive course will guide students thru the process of sourcing, applying for and managing public mosaic projects.
Instructor Laurel True will present lecture on developing designs and proposals, finding and responding to opportunities, maquette (model) making and proposal boards, writing contracts, developing budgets, presenting to committees and city agencies and more. Course will also focus on some of the nuts and bolts of managing a public mosaic project including sourcing the proper insurance, equipment, and technical support.
This unique and specific class will look at aspects of the public art proposal, presentation and selection processes and give students both a clear overview and understanding of what is involved. Class will include a digital presentation of public mosaic work around the country.

How to build your portfolio to get public work
Sourcing public jobs
Privately funded vs. publicly funded public art
Deciding weather a project is right for you
Responding to RFQs and RFPs- reality check
Designing within a budget
Creating proposal boards and samples
Making presentations/public speaking
Students will receive a binder including sample RFQs, contracts, budget templates and resources.
Instructor has experience both presenting to and being on public art committees. Public Art clients include: City of Pleasanton, San Francisco Arts Commission, City of Oakland Cultural Arts Department, City of Brentwood and City of Milpitas, CA. True has also completed many privately funded public projects. She has extensive experience working with art consultants, architects, developers and city agencies.
