Tempered Glass Mosaics
Instructor: Ellen Blakeley
The unique properties of tempered glass surely make it an exciting addition to all mosaic projects. In this two-day mosaic art class, Tempered Glass Mosaics, Visiting Artist Ellen Blakeley will take students through demonstrations and written materials on how to work with tempered glass. The lessons will include how it differs from stained glass, fusing glass, marbles and mirror. In addition to introducing students to tempered glass techniques for mosaics, Ellen will demonstrate how to work through each step of the tempered glass process from designing through sealing mosaics. Tempered glass is the perfect medium for permanently incorporating into mosaics printed imagery such as photos, drawings, labels and written words. And it is often a preferred glass medium due to its safe properties when broken into pieces.
In this mosaic art class, students will design, glaze, grout, edge, and seal their own tempered glass mosaic projects. Each student will design and produce up to four coasters, a small mirror frame and an ornamental garden rock. In addition, students are asked to bring small paper images to include in their mosaics as small images work best. Plus, they should bring an apron or work shirt to the mosaic class and a lunch. Returning students may bring their own object to mosaic (24 square inches or less).
