VISITING ARTIST SERIES: DMITRY GRUDSKY
Mosaic Garden Bench/3-D Concrete Sculpture

Instructor: Dmitry Grudsky
Level: Intermediate; some homework involved
Cost: $395
Sessions: 6
Materials: $40 to instructor on first day of class for basic class materials. Students are responsible for providing mosaic materials to cover the form (ceramic tile, glass, broken china, etc).
Prerequisite: Any mosaic experience

Students will design and create an original 3-D sculpture in this class. A garden bench or other 3-dimensional form could be produced. Students work with blocks of foam, connecting them to build different shapes to create a bench, animal, floral design, etc. Students will then cover the shape with concrete, and finally mosaic with a combination of tesserae and colored cement. Grouting and filling are final steps. Pieces are transportable, not extremely heavy. Maximum size is about 1' x 2'. Students must provide their own mosaic materials and can ask the instructor for advice regarding types and amounts of materials.

See http:// www.mosaicstudiosupply.com for materials available at the Institute of Mosaic Art. Students receive a 10% discount coupon good for one day on materials bought at MSS while enrolled in this class.

Some homework is recommended: Bring a sketch or small clay model of the bench or form you plan to make to the first class session. Around sessions 4 and 5, students may need to spend extra time outside of class to apply glass or tile tessarae to the bench. Students may bring their work home between classes or work at IMA during open lab time. The instructor will help you determine how much extra time you might need, if any.

Each student will take home a completed 1' x 2' garden bench or sculpture.

No scheduled sessions
