Mixed media mosaic and polymer clay artist and author, Laurie Mika, will lead students in the exploration a of variety of mixed media mosaic techniques in this unique two- day intensive workshop.
Students will learn how to design and create their own individual tiles out of polymer clay, which will be baked in an oven after the first day of class. These hand- made tiles will be used to create Mosaic Icons- personalized mixed media mosaics.
Students will learn through demonstrations and a hands-on approach the various steps from rolling out the clay to glazing the final product. In addition, instructor will offer many "tricks of the trade" for creating unique looks with polymer clay that can be used in other projects These "tricks" include painting, rubber stamping, using mica and embossing powders, layering clay and embedding jewelry pieces into clay. Upon completion of making their own unique tile components, students will then combine their tiles with a variety of embellishments, commercial tile and found objects to create their own personalized mixed media Mosaic Icons.
The student's final project will be a beautiful and contemporary but Byzantine-looking Icon, made on a piece of wood that can be either hung on the wall or displayed on a plate stand or easel.
Students are invited to bring any personal objects or embellishments to class to include in their project (see link below for a list of mandatory supplies). Instructor will provide some necessary materials for this project and guide students in the creation of a personal and unique work of mosaic art.
