VISITING ARTIST SERIES: LAURIE MIKA
Shadow Box Shrines

Instructor: Laurie Mika
Sessions: 2
Times: Thursday and Friday, 10 am - 4 pm
Level: Any
Cost: $265
Materials: $20

Mixed media mosaic and polymer clay artist and author, Laurie Mika, will lead students in the exploration of a variety of mixed media mosaic techniques in this unique two-day intensive workshop.

Polymer clay is the perfect medium for creating these three-dimensional mosaic shrines. In this technique driven class, students will make all of the component parts of their shrines by stamping into clay and making expressive tiles that reflect their own personalities. Students will learn how to design and create their own individual tiles out of polymer clay, which will be baked in an oven after the first day of class. These hand-made tiles will be used to create a personalized mixed media Shadowbox Shrine.

The shrines have a small recessed area where a three-dimensional object of significance can be placed. This space also allows for another opportunity to explore additional mixed media techniques.

Class will cover rubber-stamping, painting, embedding, collage, transfers, embossing, shrink plastic, beading and mosaicing. This is the class where students get to use all that stuff they've been collecting over the years! Students will take home a beautiful Shadowbox Shrine that can be either hung on the wall or displayed on a plate stand or easel.

Students are invited to bring any personal objects or embellishments to class to include in their project (see link below for a list of mandatory supplies). Instructor will provide some necessary materials for this project and guide students in the creation of a personal and unique work of mosaic art.
