VISITING ARTIST SERIES: LAURIE MIKA
Mixed Media Mosaics: Urban Icons

Instructor: Laurie Mika
Sessions: 2
Times: Saturday and Sunday, 10 am - 4 pm
Level: Any
Cost: $265
Materials: $10

Join mixed media mosaic and polymer clay artist and author, Laurie Mika for an intensive two-day, technique driven workshop creating mixed media mosaic Urban Icons.

Students will learn a variety of overlapping techniques in this class that will include: mosaic design, painting, rubber stamping, collage, embossing, beading, and embedding just about anything into polymer clay. The result will be a personal and beautiful icon that can be hung on the wall or displayed on a plate stand. This will be a hands-on workshop where students will get the experience of making and baking their own tiles and component parts out of polymer clay. These hand- made tiles will be used to create personalized mixed media Urban Icons.

Students are invited to bring any personal objects or embellishments to class to include in their project (see link below for a list of mandatory supplies). Instructor will provide some necessary materials for this project and guide students in the creation of a personal and unique work of mosaic art.

No previous clay experience is required, so come join the fun!

Student Supply List: Urban Icons

— A piece of wood for the base of your icon. It can be inch in depth (plywood, MDF, masonite) and approximately 8 x 10 inches in size. It can be square, rectangular or a triptych.
— 6 small (2 ounce) packages of Premo or Sculpey III polymer clay. Have 3 of them be the same color, I prefer the darker colors, the other 3 can be of your choosing.
— Rolling pin or acrylic rod-PVC pipe works too
— Assorted paintbrushes to include a fine detail brush
— A few rubber-stamps (if you have them) with frame shapes, texture and alphabet stamps. Instructor will be bringing lots!
— Ephemera/ do-dads to personalize your icons like charms, buttons, rhinestones, jewelry parts, and Milagros, collage sheets or photos. (see photos for ideas)
— Maybe a little something special to go in the center of your Icon such as a piece of jewelry or a photo.
