VISITING ARTIST SERIES: PIPPA MURRAY— Reverse Method for Architectural Application

Instructor: Pippa Murray
Sessions: 6
Times: Thursdays 6:00 - 8:30pm
Level: Intermediate/Advanced
Cost: $300
Materials: $35 payable to instructor first day of class

If you are serious about smooth and expert fabrication and installation of architectural mosaics, this class is for you. Students will work together on a permanent mosaic installation on site.

Taught in some of the great mosaic schools of Italy, the Reverse Method offers various advantages for mosaic installation. Large site-specific projects become manageable when planned for and fabricated in advance in the studio with this technique. Its inherently flat surface is perfect for floors and walls that need to be easy to clean, as for kitchens and bathrooms. In this six-session class students will learn through presentation and practice all of the steps involved in making a mosaic using the reverse method.

Fun and intensive, this class will begin with a presentation of some of Pippa's larger mosaic installations followed by a discussion of the project at hand. We will assess the potential site, design, prepare the cartoon, set the tesserae, flip the mosaic onto the substrate and grout and finish the piece. Some of the issues addressed will be preparation of substrates, making the appropriate glue for the reverse technique, how to key, map, and section the cartoon, and how to install for a smooth and seamless surface.

Hammer and hardie technique will be also be reviewed and these tools as well as nippers will be available for use.

Scheduled session

February 25 - April 1
