Public artist and founder of the non-profit Kid Serve, Josef Norris has been making public art and facilitating community mosaics for over ten years. Josef comes to IMA to share his vast knowledge of the community process in this course, which will combine lecture and hand on participation in a group project. Students will learn all the steps needed to facilitate mosaic projects for all kinds of civic and community groups. This is an excellent opportunity for teachers, community leaders and anyone else who is interested in facilitating group projects.
Class will begin with a slide presentation of Josef's community work. Lecture will cover such areas as: how to approach schools and other institutions, sources of funding for projects, how to procure grants and how to get started pitching an idea, as well as all the steps necessary to facilitate a community mosaic project from start to finish. The class culminates in the creation of a permanent mosaic mural.
Josef Norris' expertise in creating large-scale public art is an enduring reminder of the Bay Area's diversity and rich cultural heritage. His class offers an original program that teaches students how to enlist young artists, students and interested members of the community as apprentices, and trains them in the techniques of large format art.
Students are advised to be prepared to work outside for a portion of the class and should bring a hat. There will be a thirty-minute lunch break each day. Students may wish to bring their lunch or purchase from a nearby cafe.
