Working within the framework of the "mandala" or sacred circle, each week we integrate mosaic making with a variety of tools designed to provide reflections into artistic expression and help give meaning to your work. We explore how working with the circle can connect us with ancient symbols, cycles of nature, deeper levels of consciousness, and a more integrated perspective on your own creative process.
You design, choose materials, and set a uniquely personal 24" diameter mosaic piece. The first hour of each class begins with a guided meditation to inspire the creative mind, followed by the lecture topic of the week. The class included readings, lots of visual source material, and lots of hands-on mosaic work in a lively group setting. It is guaranteed that you will be exposed to new ideas to incorporate into your mosaic work!
You are free to work with the materials of your choice (tile, glass, stone, smalti, mixed media, etc.). Experimentation is encouraged! Homework will most likely be needed to finish the piece, depending on complexity of personal design. Lillian gives plenty of one-on-one guidance and support in unfolding your creative journey.
The class culminates in an exhibition at IMA in Spring of 2008.
Materials Note:
A recommended Materials and Reading List will be provided upon paid registration. A 24" diameter wooden base and adhesives are part of the class fee. Students should plan to provide most or all materials for their design and bring these materials to the second class. Some tile, glass, and mirror are provided. It is suggested that you have some experience in various mosaic techniques and know how to process materials.
Mind's Eye Students receive 10% off supplies from Mosaic Studio Supply.
Testimonials from former students:
"Lillian Sizemore's class was just the right mix of thought-provoking activities (something for everyone, I'd say, from walking meditation to history lessons to drawing exercises) and mosaic work time. Sizemore manages a difficult art, to create a sense of community among her students while leaving time and space for them to do their own thing and work from their own comfort zones." —A.M.W., Boise, ID
"The nurturing of the creative process and the tools to "stir the pot" made this an enormously satisfying experience for me. This is one of the very few times that I have created something I love...it all came together in your class." —R.C. Foster City, CA
"Your class is way beyond my wildest expectations - so much is "bubbling up" regarding the mandala and just life in general. I can't quite pinpoint what magic you're brewing." —J.A Berkeley, CA
"It was the first time I really used art as an expression of something within-- and not just to make something pretty. It was exciting! The connection with the group was very important. I really liked being able to sit and share our experiences with each other and express how the art itself weaved its way through our lives. —L.N. Berkeley, CA
"I enjoyed the meditation exercises, the exposure to some great reading and your feedback and expertise on our mosaic pieces was greatly appreciated. Learning about tools and exercises to tap into my creativity gave me a space to be less critical of myself." —N.C. Santa Clara, CA
