Always wanted to learn basic welding skills in a supportive environment?

This exciting new weekend workshop, Visiting Instrutor and master sculptor Brent Sumner will cover the tecniques used in making decorative steel entrance gates, garden gates, arbors, trellises, plant holders, sculptures and handrails. Custom hardware and hinges and an outline of surface treatments will also be presented.

The design process will be emphasized in this class and inspirations such as sacred geometry and organic forms will be highlighted. The design process will focus on structural integrity and translating images and patterns into steel.

Class will cover safety considerations, cutting and shaping flat bar and rod, the use of precast shapes and making custom pivots and hinges. Instruction and demonstration in tack welding to allow students to fine tune their images and designs. Students will receive instruction in basic welding with electric stick and mig welders.

This is an exciting class and geared towards those with little or no welding experience. Workshop consists of lecture and demonstrations as well as individual work with students with design, cutting steel and use of welding equipment.

Instructor will design and build a decorative garden gate during class to use an example of techniques and methods presented. Students will design and make a small steel piece. There will be a materials cost for steel and welding rods etc.
