World renown sculptor and inventor of Darjit, Brent Sumner from New Zealand will lead a lively and inspiring lecture and demonstration of the history, properties and myriad uses of this phenomenal sculpting material made form recycled materials. Class will include a digital presentation of Darjit sculpture and architectural building both here and abroad.
This three- hour lecture and demonstration will focus on armature building using lath, chicken wire and other types of wire mesh, and the use of Darjit for making both free standing sculptures and architectural, sculptural forms. A sample of Darjit will be passed around so students can feel the properties and moldable qualities themselves.
Instructor will build a medium- sized sculpture, using expanded metal lath for the armature, showing cutting, shaping and wire tying methods. Structural considerations will be focused on and many visual examples will be given for different types of armature forms.
Demonstration will include how to apply Darjit to an armature as well as a number of different
finishing patterns, textures and sculpting techniques. Finally, instructor will show techniques for embedding ceramic, mosaics or mixed media and the use of oxides for coloring.
