Wednesday Nights
In this unique multi-level course students will learn to make their own ceramic tiles for inclusion in interior mosaic projects or as individual art tiles. Discussion and demonstration will include design, working with wet clay, slab rolling and cutting techniques, surface decoration, relief and glazing.
No prior knowledge of tile making or ceramics necessary. Materials fees are payable to instructor first day of class. Continuing students welcome.
Students will design and produce their own set of ceramic tiles from start to finish using a variety of techniques.
Weekend
The weekend intensive version of this class meets two Saturdays in a row. Students will create
and glaze a set of unique ceramic tiles to personalize their mosaic work.
Instructor and ceramic tile artist Saundra Warren will demonstrate and present a variety of methods of cutting and
decorating slab-rolled wet clay, which will be fired to create tiles that can be used alone or incorporated into a future mosaic project.
Tiles students make will be bisque fired in time for the second session of the course. In the second Saturday, glazing techniques will be presented and examples of possible results shown. Instructor will provide lecture and demonstration of layering glazes and achieving different effects with underglazes. Students will glaze their bisqued tiles
for the final firing. Students will be shown examples of how to successfully incorporate handmade tiles into a mosaic composition.
All tiles will be available for student pick-up the following week.
