Precision Setting for Permanent Mosaics

Instructor: Rachel Rodi

Professional mosaic work calls for precision setting and in this class, students will focus on refining setting techniques so their finished work will be safe, durable and pass the scrutiny of the most discerning client. This unique class is geared towards students moving towards professional commissioned work, architectural projects or public art. Working with high fire ceramic tile, students will sharpen their setting, cutting and fitting skills.

Class will begin with a digital presentation of professional work, the various techniques utilized, and how they fit into the context of a large-scale project. Lecture and demonstration will include information on layout considerations for large-scale mosaics, coding drawings and other pre-planning techniques, diversifying tile shapes and lay patterns, cutting, shaping and precision fitting with exterior grade ceramic tile.

Professional grade adhesives will be discussed as well as grouting techniques to enhance precision setting and mixed media. Based on these techniques, students will complete a professional sample board. The various uses of all available tools for ceramic tile will be demonstrated and suggestions given for their best use in precision setting, including: tile strippers, breaking tools, water saws and more. Starrett nippers or Platinum nippers are strongly suggested for students who have trouble with repetitive stress injuries, arthritis or have trouble nipping high-fire tile. Both Starrett and Platinum nippers are available for purchase on site at Mosaic Studio Supply.
