Mosaic Textures
Instructor: Margo Anton
One of the most exciting elements of mosaic as an art medium is the ability to incorporate texture into a design. Visiting Artist instructor Margo Anton is back at IMA teaching a variety of ways to use the design element of texture in your mosaic art.
On Friday evening, the class will begin with a lecture and digital presentation on a vast variety of ways to create texture. Students will work on two mosaics over the course of the weekend, providing an opportunity to try out at least two texture concepts in their work. Inspiration for these mosaics will be taken from photographs provided by the instructor, or students may use their own suitable photographs, or work on an entirely original creation of their own.
These ungrouted mosaics will be created using thinset, on 8" x 8" or 8" x 10" substrates. A limited palette will be employed, encouraging focus on texture and tone to create the mosaic, rather than hue. The materials used in this course will encompass smalti, marble, stained glass, vitreous glass and more. Use of the hammer and hardie will be covered.
All materials are provided in the materials fee, but participants may choose to bring items from home to supplement or support their chosen designs. Students should expect to leave this class with a good understanding of ways to incorporate texture into mosaic, as well as the ability to do so
