Gold Leaf Mosaicons

Instructor: Laurie Mika

IMA is excited to welcome back mixed media mosaic and polymer clay artist and author Laurie Mika! Students will be taken through a workshop working with gold leaf and polymer clay to create beautiful Gold Leaf Mosaicons. Gold leafing is a technique that has been used since ancient times to create luminous, rich surfaces usually on devotional panels or icons. Students will be making contemporary icons that will have a highly embellished and jewel-like quality because of the gold leaf. Instructor will cover a wide range of tile making techniques that include rubber-stamping, painting, collage, embedding, embossing and transfers. Students will leave class with a beautiful Icon that can be hung on the wall or displayed on a plate stand or easel.

Instructor will provide
White handmade tiles, acrylic paint, mica powders, gilders paste, clay blades, scalpels, rubber stamps, gel medium, spray paint, mastic extra tile, jewelry glue, seed beads, and paint supplies.

Student Supply List
1 wood plaque or piece of wood or MDF no larger than about 8 x 10 inches and about inch thick, can be square or rectangular. If you would like it to hang, please add a hanger prior to class.

5 small (2 ounce) packages of either Premo or Sculpey III polymer clay-I prefer the darker colors (get 3 of the same color, the others can be of your choosing). Buy clay that is somewhat soft to the touch by pushing on it, if it feels rock hard don't buy it! Please condition at least half of the clay prior to class by kneading it until soft, then placing in a baggie to store it.

1 small (2 ounce) package of WHITE polymer clay

1 package of gold, silver or copper leaf (sold at Michaels)

1 Black Staz-On ink pad

Rolling pin or acrylic roller (pvc pipe works too)

A small bottle of Weldbond glue

Assorted paintbrushes to include a fine detail brush

Doo-dads like metal charms, beads, jewelry parts, Milagros, buttons, crystals, collage images, ephemera, small metal frames to embed into the clay and any other personal items to make your Icon your own, especially a center piece or focal point.
