Darjit! Concrete Garden Sculpture Workshop

Instructor: Brent Sumner

Learn how to create large scale, free form garden sculptures with steel armature, lath (a metal mesh) and Darjit, an easy to use and eco-friendly sculpting compound created by Brent Sumner.

Class begins with an inspiring slide show of darjit sculptures and architectural forms. Lecture and demonstration covers techniques to create steel bar skeletal forms for large sculpture, and how to work with wire netting and darjit as a sculpting material. Alternative, recycled structural elements for Darjit sculptures, such as buckets and old furniture, are presented and shown how they can be integrated into a freestanding sculpture.

Darjit sculptures allow for a wide variety of finishing effects, including embedded mosaics, impressed patterns, textured finishes, hand-crafted fine details and smooth exterior grade surfaces for mosaic.

Students come with an idea or two of a project or are spontaneously inspired. Brent Sumner helps each student with technique and construction approaches for their individual designs, and students complete a large scale, free standing darjit sculpture for their garden, courtyard or deck. Students should be prepared for outdoor class sessions by wearing weather appropriate protection (including weather changes), such as sun hats and sunscreen.
