Darjit! One-Day Small Scale Garden Sculpture
Instructor: Brent Sumner
In this one-day workshop, create small to medium scale garden sculptures with expanded metal lath and Darjit, an easy to use and eco-friendly sculpting compound created by Brent Sumner.
Expanded metal lath is the most versatile of metal meshes available for sculpture making and has enough structural strength to create small sculptures without internal steel or rebar armature. Sculpt Darjit right onto the lath to create a smooth or detailed sculpted surface.
Maximum project scale is 3' high x 20" diameter. No rebar will be used so forms created must be contained (eg: no extended limbs or animals standing on four legs).
Lecture and demonstration includes techniques to cut, shape and tie expanded metal lath to create a strong sculptural form. Darjit mixing and application techniques are demonstrated, including information on creating sculptural details, and embedding mixed materials into the darjit.
Brent Sumner helps each student with technique and construction approaches for their individual designs, and students complete a small to medium scale darjit sculpture suitable for interior or garden environments.
Students should be prepared for outdoor class sessions by wearing weather appropriate protection (including weather changes), such as sun hats and sunscreen.
