Instructor: Laurel True

This comprehensive 4-day intensive class offers an introduction to the mosaic medium from a contemporary viewpoint, introducing students new or relatively new to the medium to various materials, techniques and styles while receiving a sound technical base from which to continue their explorations.

Class will include a series of digital presentations showcasing the work of contemporary mosaic artists working in different media, including conceptual, decorative and functional approaches to mosaic making.

Students will work on a series of projects designed to help them to explore theory, texture, pattern, form and color, as well as setting techniques inspired by age-old traditions and modern applications and interpretations.

Daily lecture and demonstration will get students familiar with many different types of media including stained glass, smalti, vitreous glass, mirror and other specialty glass, ceramic tile, stone and mixed media. Students will have a chance to explore working on sample projects for interior display and exterior use as well as on three-dimensional forms.

Class will include extensive instruction in the use of all common contemporary tools used for mosaic making, pairing the correct tools with various types of materials.
