There is much excitement and enthusiasm among students about learning to create three-dimensional concrete forms for mosaic. From garden planters, sculptural benches to architectural elements, we have a class for it all! We have a whole series of concrete classes at IMA to choose from for beginners and well as seasoned sculptors. All of these classes focus on making unique and durable substrates that can receive mosaic embellishment.

October 1 - 5
Sessions: 5  •  Monday - Friday: 10:00a - 5:00p
Instructor: Brent Sumner  •  Level: Any  •  Cost: $595.00

MSS
Join Brent Sumner for a week long Darjit! architectural workshop. Darjit is an eco-friendly architectural building & sculpting material made from recycled materials and cement. It sculpts like clay, but has the strength of concrete.

This course will cover the hands on building of an outdoor garden privacy wall with inbuilt seating to create a hang out/communication area in the shape of a horse shoe with entrance columns. Class will include extensive information and demonstration of the creation of rebar, and wire armatures that will then be covered with Darjit.

October 6 - 7  •  January 12 - 13  •  March 15 - 16
Sessions: 2  •  Saturday 10:00am - 4:00pm & Sunday: 10:00a - 2:00p
Instructor: Tracy Broback  •  Level: Beginning  •  Cost: $195.00

The class everyone has been asking for!!!

MSS
This class is perfect for students new to sculpture or for those wanting to learn how to lighten their concrete work and work with carved styrofoam. Students will learn how to use fiberglass mesh and concrete with an acrylic additive applied to Styrofoam shapes they make themselves to create lightweight sculptures suitable for mosaic use outdoors.

Design and display techniques will be presented and Styrofoam carving tools will be introduced. Students will learn how to carve their own sculptural forms out of Styrofoam and or assemble armatures out of everyday and easy to find objects.

October 26 - 28
Sessions: 3  •  Fri. 7:00p - 9:00p, Sat. & Sun. 9:00a - 5:00p
Instructor: Brent Sumner  •  Level: Any  •  Cost: $245.00

Students will learn how to use Darjit— an eco-friendly architectural building & sculpting material made from recycled materials and cement— to create sculptural concrete forms.

MSS
Each workshop begins with a demonstration and individual practice at using Darjit for free-form sculpture. Next, the techniques for creating the skeletal forms for large sculpture are demonstrated. Wire netting and steel bars, are typically used for skeletal forms, which can also be made from recycled material such as buckets and old furniture.

A wide variety of effects can be achieved with Darjit, including embedded mosaic patterns, impressed patterns, textured finishes and hand crafted fine details.

Students will come away with a completed garden sculpture. Work is still wet on the last day of class and it is suggested that students pick up dry work on the Wednesday following the class.

November 10 - 11  •  February 16 - 17
Sessions: 2  •  Saturday & Sunday: 10:00am - 4:00pm
Instructor: Myles Blackwood  •  Any Level  •  Cost: $175.00

MSS
This is an intensive course and an excellent introduction to concrete sculpture using the concrete shell method. A hollow form, a beach ball or a box, is covered with layers of fiberglass mesh and acrylic concrete to form a durable substrate for mosaic application. Students will layer on cut pieces of mesh onto layers of a special type of concrete and learn to work the surface to achieve a smooth finish.

These hollow concrete forms can be used as substrates for exterior, garden or interior use. Class will include lecture and demonstration for fabricating these simple concrete sculptural forms.
