What a great year 2005 was and we are so looking forward to the unfolding of 2006!

We celebrated the opening of our retail store this past year, Mosaic Studio Supply and the founding of the Institute of Mosaic Art AND the move into our new building at 3001 Chapman Street in Oakland, CA. So many positive and exciting changes have happened in 2005.

We are excited to invite and welcome new and returning students, visitors and colleagues to IMA in 2006 as we expand our programming and outreach. Please watch for rotating exhibitions of mosaic art in our gallery spaces, opportunities to exhibit, new lectures and slide presentations and an expansion of our resource library.

We have a terrific lineup of Visiting Instructors this season including Donna Billick, Jim Bachor, Ellen Blakeley, Sherri Warner Hunter, Sonia King, Elizabeth Raybee, Lillian Sizemore, Karen Thompson, and Carolina Zanelli from Italy to name a few.

In 2006 we will be announcing our Certificate Program in Mosaic Arts as well as offering thanks to our returning students with IMA Student Cards, which will be good for discounts on courses and supplies. These are only a few of the programs in the works!

Come by Institute of Mosaic Art and Mosaic Studio Supply to take a course, browse our bookshop and supply store, be inspired by the exhibitions, sit down and make a mosaic at Mosaic Cafe, make use our resource library or just come and soak in the great environment and enjoy our outdoor gardens and mosaic murals!

We hope to see you soon and all the best,

Laurel True, Director
Institute of Mosaic Art

Karen Thompson
From the Botanica Series
Botanica Series 2001-2005
A series of 12 fine art mosaic works

“Inspired by 16th and 17th century florilegia, books created to catalog plant collections of the times, I decided to emulate in mosaics, the pages of illustration that I came to love in my library of botanical illustration and all things floral. In each panel of the series Travertine is inset with a labeled specimen plant in the foreground surrounded by a series of fanciful borders filled with flowers and vines and insects. I took great pleasure in selecting the materials from my “treasure chest”: mixes of marble, semi precious stones, glass of all kinds as well as beads and shells.”

This exhibition ties in with her course Mixed Media Tesselation— Indirect Techniques and a Friday night lecture on March 10th.
