IMA founder and director, Laurel True just returned from a trip to Ghana, West Africa where she and fellow mosaic artist Mary McDermott co-facilitated a community mosaic mural project with community members of Nungua, a fishing town near the capitol city. The subject of the mural had to so with a story about fishermen and the night sky.
Laurel and Mary also led a "rap session" with youth from West Oakland and in West Africa for cross collaborative design inspirations for a series of mosaic benches to be sited in a park in West Oakland.
Upcoming: Community mosaic mural project at Belle Chase Academy School in New Orleans in May.
