in Jim Bachor's class
IMA was proud to host Visiting Instructor Jim Bachor at the end of February for an in-depth course on Ravenna style mosaics in the double reverse method. Students came away with two pieces, one in marble and one in smalti and were well versed by the end of the course in using the hammer and hardie.

Thanks to Jim for sharing his expertise and offering such a great course!

At SAMA
Our SAMA table
March was a busy month as IMA and Mosaic Studio Supply traveled to Chicago for the SAMA Conference. The Chicago Team put on a wonderful event and a great time was had by all. It was so great to see so many friends, colleagues and students at this event. IMA and MSS shared a table at the Vendor Show and sold out of many of the items we brought, especially Starrett and Platinum Nippers!! Another shipment on the way!

We were thrilled to host Visiting Instructor Sherri Warner Hunter to IMA March 24-30 for a week-long intensive in concrete sculpture for mosaics. Sherri is a well known author, educator and public artist. She gave a wonderful slide lecture for our Mosaic Lecture and Adventure Series, showing her own work and the work of many inspiring folk, outsider and visionary environments made from concrete and mosaic.

Students came away from a super fun, concrete filled week with three sculptural projects ready to take home and mosaic! Sherri promises to return next year for another session of "Concrete Institute".

Mosaic artist and educator Carole Dobson from Alberta, Canada was down for the course and gave a great slide presentation, Ancient to Contemporary Mosaic Journey on the last evening of the course.

The second session of Mosaics from the Mind's Eye, Lillian Sizemore's unique and empowering course, came to a close. The student works produced are amazing, deep and powerful. Please read on for exhibition information.

IMA Director Laurel True attended the Community Built Association Conference (March 31- April 2) in Monterey, California to share and learn with other community based artists and educators. It was an incredible weekend filled with amazing seminars, sessions and connections. VERY INSPIRING!

We hosted members of the Chicago Public Art Group at IMA in the days afterward to further exchange ideas and energies. So many exciting things to come...

True Mosaics Studio

Lots of great projects going on in our commissions studio!

We are about to install a series of three 15' ceramic tile murals with mirror accents that refer to the Arts in Oakland on the facade of a new building in downtown Oakland, as well as a series of four murals in Richmond, CA that refer to the natural surroundings of the Marina Bay area.

We are simultaneously working on a sculptural bench in the shape of a starfish/ spaceship for a children's park in Milpitas, CA. Lots more on tap!

We had a wonderful time at SAMA in Chicago and are excited about some of the items we brought with us to the Vendor show and will continue to stock in the store. Our most popular item by far at the show was our newly introduced Starrett Nippers. These are high quality nippers that make cutting hard tesserae and materials a breeze. They come in both 5 and 7" lengths and are an amazing tool.

Mosaic Artist Shirt
We are also stocking many more art and art related books including rare and hard to find books on our heroine Niki de Saint Phalle, as well as other artist specific books (Gaudi, Hundertvasser, Simon Rodia, Klimt and more...). We are also stocking great inspiration books for warm weather projects, including both of Sherri Warner Hunter's concrete sculpture books, books on pebble mosaics, garden design and exterior mosaics.

"Mosaic Artist" t-shirts are here! Girlie style orchid and regular t-shirt style in purple... "Institute of Mosaic Art" is printed across the back. These are hot.. and oh so stylish.

Mosaic Yearbook is hot off the presses, a compilation of over 300 mosaic pieces done by artists in 2005 from around the world. This wonderful cd book was put together by Bill Buckingham of Mosaic Atlas and Lynn Moor of Mosaic Smalti. A wonderful source of inspiration and a piece of modern mosaic history.

Mosaic Studio Supply
We just got a HUGE shipment of Mexican tile into Mosaic Studio Supply right from Mexico. We have so many beautiful patters and colors of 4 x 4" and 2 x 2" terra cotta tiles.

Come visit Institute of Mosaic Art and Mosaic Studio Supply soon!
