California Mosaics Exhibit Artist's Reception at IMA |
We started July with a bang with the opening of IMA's first juried exhibition, "California Mosaics" on July 8th with an artist's reception. This was a great success and attendance was huge (topped only by our Grand Opening last Sept 05!) We had lots of fun and the exhibit is breathtaking with almost 40 artists from all over California represented. On display through September 3rd.

Doggie fun at IMA's Mosaic Pet Portraiture Exhibit opening |
Also on display this summer and still on view is "Woofer Art! Mosaic Pet Portraiture", curated by our resident Mosaic Pet Portraiture instructor and Mosaic Studio Supply manager Delaine Hackney.
The exhibit is professional and adorable and the pet friendly artist's reception was a riot. Ukelele band, the Tin Pan Howlies played out back while Delaine passed trays of doggie treats.
Next Mosaic Pet Portrait course: September 7 - October 12th, Thursday evenings!
Upcoming Exhibitions will include Bad Ass Mosaics and Big Love, both invitational exhibits and three student exhibits. Please look for announcements on our website and the IMAyahoo group.

Teen working with tile |
Teens at the Life Learning Academy visited IMA last month for two days to learn mosaic setting techniques. They were studying tessellation as it relates to math-combining the two disciplines in a unique course of study. This spirited group were a great reminder of the multifaceted world of mosaics!
IMA is very involved in community activities right here in Jingletown and participated in the first annual Jingletown Art Walk in conjunction with East Bay Open Studios this June. IMA is a founding member of the Jingletown Arts and Business Community (JABC) and active in planning future arts events in the neighborhood.

Mural in downtown Oakland |
True Mosaics Studio, located inside the IMA building, created multiple commissioned projects this spring and summer including: Scenic Richmond, series of four ceramic and mirror mosaic murals sited in Richmond, CA; Oakland Arts, series of three 15' murals sited in downtown Oakland; Starscape Bench, sited in Starlite Park in Milpitas, CA.

Starscape Bench, Milpitas |
True Mosaics Studio also facilitated two great community projects, one in Sycamore Park, Mill Valley, CA in conjunction with Sycamore Park Association and Leathers and Associates-a wonderful 200+ square foot ceramic tile and mirror mosaic sandbox surround. Thanks to Ericka Clark-Shaw for her donation of handmade tiles for this project, and thanks to the 50+ community members who participated.

Sandbox surround, Mill Valley |
We also worked with youth in West Oakland in conjunction with the Trust for Public Land in July on a mosaic dolphin sculpture in Bertha Port Park. This bare concrete sculpture had been in the park for over 50 years and we gave her an extreme makeover...mosaic style!
Upcoming projects include:
Series of two sculptural mosaic benches in Kaleidoscope Park, Brentwood, CA, and a series of three sculptural mosaic benches in Rainbow's End Park, Brentwood, CA. Both of these are kid's parks so the designs are really fun, bright and educational.
